Planning Your Visit to the Cathedral

The cathedral sits at the heart of Morelia's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, so it is easy to fold into a walking day rather than treat as a separate trip. The plazas on either side, Plaza de Armas and Plaza Melchor Ocampo, frame the building and give you the best angles on its twin towers, which rank among the tallest of any colonial-era church in Mexico. Arrive early in the morning if you want soft light on the pink cantera stone and quieter arcades around the square.

Inside the nave

Although the exterior is Baroque, much of the interior was remodelled in a more restrained Neoclassical style during the nineteenth century. Look for the large pipe organ, a celebrated instrument that has drawn organists to the city for recitals and festivals, and the silver baptismal font. Remember that the cathedral is an active place of worship: dress modestly, keep voices low, and avoid walking the aisles during Mass. Photography rules can change, so watch for posted signs or ask staff at the entrance.

The evening light show

Many visitors return after dark, when the facade is illuminated and, on certain evenings, the towers are lit in a short display accompanied by fireworks. Schedules vary through the year and around holidays, so check locally on the day rather than relying on a fixed time. The surrounding portales are full of cafés where you can wait with a hot chocolate or a plate of local sweets.

Fitting it into a wider trip

Morelia makes a natural base before or after time on the water.
