How these places fit together on a trip from Morelia

The places listed here fall into three loose clusters, and thinking of them that way makes planning much easier. The first is Morelia itself, where the cathedral anchors a historic centre built largely from pinkish quarry stone and recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is the natural base for everything else: most buses and road trips in the state start or pass through here.

The second cluster is the Lake Pátzcuaro basin, roughly an hour or so west by road. Pátzcuaro town, Janitzio Island, the Purépecha archaeological site at Tzintzuntzan and the copper-working town of Santa Clara del Cobre sit close enough together that many visitors combine two or three in a single long day, or better, spend a night or two in Pátzcuaro. Tzintzuntzan's yácatas, the distinctive stepped platforms of the former Purépecha capital, pair well with a lakeside afternoon, while Santa Clara rewards anyone curious about hand-hammered copperware. Boats to Janitzio leave from the Pátzcuaro docks; around the Day of the Dead the island and lake towns become extremely busy, so book lodging well ahead if you plan to visit then.

The third cluster is the Pacific coast. Playa Larga near Lázaro Cárdenas and Zihuatanejo Bay across the Guerrero border are a long drive down from the highlands, so treat them as a separate leg rather than a day trip. The shift in climate is dramatic: cool, often chilly highland evenings give way to warm, humid coastal air, so pack for both.

Tlalpujahua, home to the San Miguel Arcángel monastery, lies in the opposite direction, toward the eastern edge of the state. It is an old mining town best known for its handmade Christmas ornaments and fits naturally into a route toward Mexico City.
