From College Rinks to the NHL: How Hockey Trades Work

The story behind this page dates from 2018, when a former University of Maine hockey standout was traded to the Edmonton Oilers. That moment has long passed, but it points to something many fans find confusing: how a player moves from a college programme into professional hockey, and why a trade can be welcome news rather than a setback.

The college route into professional hockey

NCAA Division I programmes such as Maine's, which plays in the Hockey East conference, have produced NHL players for decades. Some players are drafted before or during their college years, and their NHL club holds their rights while they keep studying and playing. Others go undrafted and sign as free agents once their college eligibility ends. In both cases, most new professionals start in the minor leagues, usually the AHL, before they earn regular NHL ice time.

Why a trade can feel like a fresh start

To fans, a trade can look like rejection. Players often see it differently. A crowded depth chart in one organisation can keep a young player in the minors for years. A new club with gaps at a certain position may offer a real chance to compete for a roster spot. A player who calls a trade an opportunity is often being sincere.

What trades mean for the player off the ice

  • Relocation: moving cities, sometimes across a border, often at short notice.
  • New systems: learning a different coaching style, line combinations and team culture.
  • Contract status: the existing contract usually moves with the player, although the new club may restructure plans for him.

Travellers who follow sport often plan trips around games. A road trip to see a team play in a new arena can pair well with exploring the host city. Our itineraries cover a different kind of journey along the coast and lakes, but the planning advice carries over. Check official team schedules, book seats and lodging early, and allow for weather on winter routes. For more reflective travel writing, browse our essays.
